Double Pug Switch: The Review

Pug. Meet Portal. Portal, Pug.

Who here loves pugs? How about two pugs? Platformer challenges? Runners? Throw in a bit of interdimensional portal hopping and this’ll likely be the game for you! The developer's Apriori Digital bring a fun and simple game that some can pick up and play to pass the time. It’s a rather interesting concept that fills a small niche of dogs and runner platformer games.

The storyline is pretty simple. You play a somewhat mischievous but good pug, affected by a catastrophe that occurred in a laboratory. You accidentally stumble into an alternative dimension with the Professor’s cat, Whiskers and find yourselves in quite a predicament. Upon exploring this world, Whiskers suddenly has an idea. Remove all dogs from existence. Empowered with a new goal, he gives himself a new name, “Lord Sker”. So what’s the goal? Make your way through the lab with your interdimensional warping ability, and stop the nefarious cat’s plan for world domination. Leap and warp through different 40 different worlds, and strategize a way to take Lord Sker down once and for all.

A pug a day keeps Lord Sker at bay.

The gameplay is not difficult to comprehend, but I can guarantee it’ll be at least difficult to master. You get from point A to point B and sometimes dimension hop to land on the flooring that only exists in that dimension. As for the keys… The only ones you’ll need to worry about is the shift dimension and jump keys. They’re thankfully not assigned too far away from one another, and there is a tutorial mode to get used to the overall placement of the keys. Once that pup starts running, there’s no stopping him, at least not until he reaches the end of the line. The dimension-hopping definitely kept me on my toes!

The keys allow you to avoid traps, access certain platforms and at times make use of power-ups, and with these tools, you can reach the all-important checkpoints. However, I had a small concern regarding the game, since there was no warning prior to hitting a checkpoint. It has since changed in the latest update! I did find myself frustrated, losing many times since key placement felt clunky to me, and for some reason, I was unable to choose where to move the keys to in the options. The game works with a lot of trials and errors. While it is possible to make fast perfect runs, you’ll find that it'll be pretty difficult. That asides, there’s a decent amount of content, and you can unlock items like hats and so on.

No pugs were hurt in the making of this game.

Let’s get talking about the graphics and music. I thought that the background and characters were vibrant, 2D and have a cute, comic-like flair to it. There’s a nice and consistent color scheme between the regular world and the world Otis warps into, regardless of which section he enters into. The music isn’t anything too special, however, it's pleasant enough to listen to during your plays.

While I found the gameplay to be a bit of a frustrating experience, it's a cute game you can mindlessly play to take your mind off a stressful workday. In saying that, when I first started playing the game, I was left more stressed as I was unable to master the placement of the keys. There is a good level of replayability, mostly if you’re using a portable console like the Nintendo Switch or laptop. I also noticed there was good pacing between level difficulties, hence my becoming frustrated after a point within the game. However, I can imagine that on the X-box it might prove to be a harder sell. In saying that though, I thought the pricing was very good. The charm and simplicity of the game will, however, definitely have me coming back to play it.

Double Pug Switch can be purchased on the Steam Store.

It can also be purchased on the Nintendo Store and for the Xbox.

We are huge fans of animals at GGP so why not start with our moderator Nora's new cat feeder? She has an amazingly fluffy Instagram for her cats Oliver and Timriv that can be found here and I'm sure there will be more content to come. She got a new cat feeder and Oliver can be seen using it here in this post, click the link for more pics!

Nora explains: "It reads the chip he has in his neck and opens when he goes under it. I get a miauw on my phone when he is finished and I can see how much he ate and when!" How cute!

JapaniKatti's Telltale's The Walking Dead Season 1

Long-time friend of the community, JK, had streamed the entirety of TWD Season 1 and the 400 Days DLC on her Twitch and uploaded it to her YouTube for us lovely viewers. I watched it personally and her series is full of laughs, heartbreak, and of course spoilers. Even if you've played or watched before I recommend it. First episode embedded below and link to full playlist here.

Bordeaux and Bottled Tastes

Bordeaux is a new dad but he doesn't let that keep him from staying busy in the community. He is going to be Operations & Community Specialist for G.Round, a play test community where they feature 2-4 free indie games a week where people leave reviews on and fill out a survey submitted by the game studios. More on that to come! He's a big supporter of indie devs. He also has been busy within the Indie Game community for the last year, writing about indie games for his very own website BottledTastes.com. This week in our community content channel, he shared his list on the DreamHack Beyond Steam demos and games via his steam curator located here.

Want Some of BAE's Bread?

For something a little less serious, check out this delicious slab of food porn BAE shared with us. We will not be sharing his full description because, well, it's BAE, but he goes on to say, "I made bread yesterday. It's white. Audible sound when sliced. Do recommend." Well, recommend you guys share more home-cooked food with us.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses Review

Forge your own path in this epic fantasy roleplaying game.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a brilliant fantasy tactical role-playing game where you enter the shoes of a mercenary turned homeroom teacher. Three Houses marks the 16th game in the Fire Emblem series and is the first mainline game to reach its way onto the Nintendo Switch. It is known for its epic fantasy stories and engaging combat. But believe it or not, there was a time where the series was nearing its end. Now, it stands as one of the best games to date, where it blends some mechanics you’d typically see in Persona line games with Fire Emblem’s traditional fighting mechanics.

Enter the “olde worlde” of “Fodlan“. You don’t really know much about the world outside you, nor do you know how to express yourself very much. Sometimes, you dream of a little green-haired lady sitting on a throne. Your partner in crime is none other than your father, Jeralt. One evening, you and your father stumble upon three students from the Church of Seiros. Their names are Dimitri Alexandre BlaiddydEdelgard von Hresvelg and Claude von Riegan. These three just so happen to be the most influential young rulers of three areas within Fodlan and they need your help.

A new path to tread.

They were under attack, so you and your father took it onto yourselves to save them. Then, if you are successful, you are taken away to Garreg Mach Monastary to meet with the Archbishop, Lady Rhea. Impressed with your abilities, she offers you a job as a homeroom teacher for one of the “three houses”. Each house is filled with fantastic narratives, an enriched storyline, and as you progress, an insight into different geopolitical worlds. You cannot turn back, once you pledge allegiance to a house. And as much as you’d like to, you cannot save everybody. You’ll have some very difficult decisions after a certain point regardless of routes, but I’ll leave you to decide which path to tread to uncover its secrets.

In this playthrough, I selected the female character.

What’s my strategy?

Now, let’s look at the gameplay. It’s pretty similar to the Persona series, in the sense that the story and gameplay are closely interconnected with one another. Firstly, there’s the overall structure. To keep with the school theme, there are regimented calendars, lesson plans and tasks to complete. You are responsible during most working weeks for teaching students from Monday through to Saturday. Lesson plans will typically involve either working with students towards mastering skillsets, how to fly horses and more. Sometimes, you’ll be delegating tasks to students to partake in stable duty or choir practice. There’s also the option to recruit units from “other houses”, and develop your relationships with them.

Additionally, you’ll have students approach you regarding their future career or other matters altogether. On Sundays however, that is your day off. Feel free to fill that day doing whatever it is you wish to do and explore this Hogwarts-like school. Fish to your heart’s contentinvite students for teaplant some veggies. There’s a myriad of activities to choose fromWith the DLC, you have the option to do even more for yourself and for your students. You also have an entirely new area to explore beneath the school, and even more characters to potentially recruit!

Each battle is a chance to grow.

The battle mechanics are mostly the same as in previous games. It’s a grid-based strategy game, with multiple units types to select from. When choosing the difficulty in the beginning of the game, you can select to turn on or off permanent deaths. Your goal? Destroy all of your opponents, or complete certain requirements to win the battle. It can range from surviving for 25 rounds or get team members to designated points.

Additionally, there’s a special device called a Divine Pulse, which for a limited set of times you can return back in time to change a move you made. You can spend minutes to hours pondering over which moves your units will have to make. Don’t be cocky though! Lose too many Divine Pulse turns and you’ll have no choice but to helplessly watch units around you die. Not only that, but the weapons also degrade over time!

The quality of the graphics in Three Houses truly is spectacular! Everything is presented in a vibrant and detailed way, from exploring around the monastery to the overall landscapes shown in battle. The animation is beautiful, with cutscenes that feel like they could be part of an anime series. I also noticed small things that had changed in some of the animations when it came to battles. For example, there are no longer animations for “entering” an attack, and it truly makes a difference (for the better).

It’s important to keep a balanced schedule.

Here is something to believe in!

I cannot rate the series highly enough for its musical composition, especially for storytelling purposes. Rei Kondoh has really outdone himself with the stellar selection offered to us! The original soundtrack is not only consistent in quality, but quantity too and is bursting with range and depth. It’s certainly different, and you can tell there’s a lot of experimentation with fusing genres into songs. It can be so easy to mess this up, yet somehow he made it work for Three Houses. I cannot mention my favorite ones on the soundtrack here as the title itself is a spoiler for one of the routes, so I urge you to try all the routes to find your favorite!

I honestly believe that it deserves the title of Game of the Year for 2019. It’s got so much to offer to players, and each route you select racks up to at least 40 or more hours. I honestly didn’t want any of the characters to die so it took longer for me to complete each route. I believe that it is so much more than a strategy social simulating JRPG. It was wonderful watching them grown with you over the period of the route. I cannot praise the combat and class tier system enough, and it was honestly even more exciting to challenge myself further in the expanded DLC storyline and missions! I racked up at least 275 hours of gameplay, and I’ll be definitely coming back to play this game again. Both the base game and DLC are absolutely worth every penny.

You can purchase Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its DLC on the Nintendo Store!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - The Review

A Deserted Island Getaway Package just for you

Let’s talk about a headliner game from Nintendo that took the internet by storm on March 20th, 2020. We’re talking about the real-time life simulation that is Animal Crossing: New Horizons (or if you prefer something shorter: ACNH). It’s the 8th and newest edition to the series and is jampacked with new features and mechanics that will provide endless hours of gameplay. Think Stardew Valley, if it was set on a vacation island, but with less direction, and less of a need to be productive.

If you could bring ONE thing with you to a deserted island, what would it be?

The story is easy to follow. You’re buying a Deserted Island Getaway Package and start off at a check in counter with two “Nooklings” called “Timmy” and “Tommy“. You’re asked a series of questions, and you can select the initial island map, name the island/avatar, and more. Soon, you board and make your way to your very own island! You then meet Tom Nook, head of Nook Incorporated and two random villagers. Tom helps out with island upgrades, residential services, is the dedicated task-giver, also acting as the leader/developer of the island. He’s also the lender for your brand new house. Tom is kind enough to give you all the time you need to pay him back, without interest! Though you start off living in a tent with limited amenities, you’ll eventually unlock more features over time to customize your island and expand your house.

The goal? Get your island famous and populated enough to grab K.K. Slider‘s attention! Also, get him interested enough to want to perform gigs in person. But what about the rest? What happens once you reach that goal? Well, that’s down to you.

Enjoy life, your way. Sky’s the limit!

Whether you are a newcomer to the series or a seasoned veteran, the gameplay works surprisingly well with integrating you into its world. You start off with no tools, museums, infrastructures or easy way to get around, but you do get a “Nook Phone” that updates and adds applications. You must first craft and collect everything yourself, including the essentials to get started. This is in order to get acquainted with how to personalize your island. It’s an intuitive, innovative method of introducing small goals into what is otherwise an open experience. As your game is based on “real-time”, you can get about completing goals at your own pace, and have new game mechanics introduced to you at your own pace. In other words, there’s no rush to complete tasks and you can work it into a daily routine.

Please keep this in mind as you’re designing your island though! You can only construct up to eight bridges and eight staircases. You also have a limited amount of slots for custom designs, so choose carefully! For those who have not got the game just yet, there’s just one more caveat: You can only own one island per Switch, no matter how many people are using the Switch.

Nook Phone? Check! Tools? Double-check!

The game rewards small chunks of consistent playtime, however, you can also choose to play huge chunks and still be rewarded for your efforts. But what kind of rewards will you get? Well, the possibilities are endless! Some examples include obtaining new buildings, new residents, more tools, terrain building, creating stairs and bridges, making custom paths, setting your own island theme/song and more! There’s even an island development ranking system! There’s never a dull moment with New Horizons, and the regular updates also keep the gameplay fresh and teeming with creative opportunities. Additionally, you can invite friends over to your island (provided you have a Nintendo Online subscription), and participate in various events.

The graphics have been vastly improved and polished in comparison to the game’s previous installments. The attention to detail in the weather system and every item/character truly brings this game and your island to life. The attention to detail about wildlife facts, art, and so on are simply stunning. Your experience in designing and customizing equipment and outfits will be much more convenient than before! The current installment to the series truly was a much-needed facelift and I am all here for it!

Bubblegum K.K.?? Bubblegum K.K.

No, this isn’t Bubblegum K.K.

Let’s discuss music. New Horizons has this in abundance, and its variety is just marvelous. Each hour has its own soundtrack, bringing about its own charm to the game. Then, there’s K.K. Slider’s extensive list of songs you could request or purchase with in-game currency, and have played across all four corners of the island. If you’re more of a live gig viewer, provided you have already grabbed his attention, Mr. Slider will come on a special day during the week and perform exclusively for the residents of your island. You can request for any of your favorite songs, or ask him to choose for you. Pretty neat, right?

What of the updates? What’s the verdict?

Since the game’s initial release, it met with several intriguing updates. Previous updates include Eastertwo Summer updates, Halloween/Fall and more, containing special themed DIYs, events, collectibles, outfits, game mechanics, and more. Out of all the updates so far, my personal favorite has to be the update that introduced the swimming mechanic. You could now explore the ocean surrounding the island and collect various items to spruce up the look of your island. Since the Halloween update has only just dropped, I’ve only just been introduced to the new content that came with it, including the brand new pumpkin farming mechanic!

I am excited for what’s to come with the New Horizon updates in the future, and strongly recommend for people to grab a copy of this game. There’s endless amounts of replay-ability, content and creative possibilities at your fingertips. I’m always creating something new, or updating the look of my island. If I’m not happy with a particular area, it’s not too hard to remove and reconstruct everything. It’s fun, but time consuming so I often play in short bursts to not burn myself out. As of now, I’m sitting on 425 hours of gameplay, and counting. Worth every penny.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons can be purchased on the Nintendo Store.

Heroes of Hammerwatch

Are you looking for a unique roguelite?

Heroes of Hammerwatch may be worth your consideration. Don't confuse it with Hammerwatch (which was released 5 years earlier) the coop dungeon crawler. Heroes of hammerwatch is basically the same game with all the neat quality-of-life improvements and near infinite replayability added. It's still a dungeon crawler, it's still coop or singleplayer - but, it's now a roguelite instead of roguelike.

Classic feel repolished

If you've played Hammerwatch, you'll quickly notice Heroes of Hammerwatch looks and feels quite similar in many ways. Including the stages, traps and monsters. The interface has changed and other elements have been kicked up and polished just enough to feel a little smoother. Controls now include the mouse (hammerwatch did not), a redone gui, icons and various other graphical tweaks and improvements. The main game still features a big tower to climb, punishing bosses and the same cooperative (4 player) team with which to get through the trap filled tower.

More skills

Your basic left mouse button attack, right mouse button to perform a skill are still there, but have been expanded with a mouse3 and mouse4 skill. Aside that, each class has access to a few unique passives. The BIG difference with the original Hammerwatch is that you can upgrade all your skills. Also, there's now 7 basic classes (up from the original 6) as well as 2 more classes from the DLCs. Which puts the total up to 9. You can find the DLC on steam, not on Humble for some odd reason. And they're cheap, only a few dollars.

As you progress up the tower you'll find ore, and gold. The two basic ingredients with which to upgrade the base town. Every upgrade increases the number of available tiers worth of class upgrades, skills, items, you name it.

Some vendors may need to be found as a random event (like the inn, or the sorcerer), but once found they will be available for any future playthrough where you host the game.

As you kill monsters your character will grow stringer (level up!). Since this is a roguelite - you keep your levels after a death. By default the game has a level cap of 20 - but your progression does not end there by any means. You can go up 5 extra levels each time you beat a new game plus, or plus plus plus plus. The growth all scales up for many months worth of playthroughs.

Upgrades to infinity

Once you cap out the town, finish your levels and skills, there's something else to note. All the classes give perks to your other classes. For example if you beat the first boss with the archer - all your other classes gain +2 weapon skill. Permanently, free of charge. If you were to do the same with the Paladin, they'd all gain a permanent +2 armor. The second, third (and so forth) bosses all improve this global benefit. And this benefit extends through the ladders into New Game plus. This ensures you have a reason - and get a benefit for all future playthroughs as different classes.

Aside boss kills, just about everything else is tracked as well. Gold found, gold spent, items bought, items gambled. "A lot" does not begin to cover it. These give achievement points and increases the overall fame of your "guild". As the guild (your collection of characters) grows in game, so do your rewards. New characters start with higher skill points.

As mentioned there's a few DLC for the game. One is just (cheap) a new class - the witch hunter. The other two add new areas. In particular the City of Stone, and the Path of Sorrow. Higher level dungeons each with new bosses, enemies and items to find.

The City of Stone in particular has an interesting mechanic where you may construct a statue that boosts your stats. Currently there is no known limit to the level of these. So you could continue upgrading this statue at an increasing cost all the way to infinity.

Fight the boss

The first two bosses are a pushover. Easy by comparison to the later fights. Yes you will die - a lot. Bring friends, or better, bring three friends. If you get killed a friend will be able to resurrect you "once". After getting resurrected you will become soul-linked. Which basically means your fates (life/death) are linked together. The next time either of the two of you gets killed, you will both snuff it. If you have more friends, you'll have more chances to repeat this mistake. There are only two ways to remove a soul link, death, or finding a graveyard. At the graveyard you may clean the soul-link debuff and be "reborn". Ready to fight, or die again.

The later fights will push your cooperative skills to the limit. Below is the fourth boss. (Not so much a spoiler) He will mess you up good.

If you've beaten a boss (every 3 floors initially), the next time you reach the first floor of a biome, you are given the option to skip that biome by entering a red portal. Nothing comes for free though, you will have to defeat a growing horde of enemies before you are overwhelmed. As a bonus for skipping 3 floors and a boss, you're given 8 random items to improve your power for this run. Items are lost between runs however - but you'll find great synergy in them with your other skills.

Heroes of Hammerwatch was released in 1 March, 2018. It features three DLC at the time of writing:
- Witch Hunter (class)
- Pyramid of Prophecy (new zone and bosses)
- Moon Temple (new zone and bosses)

The game is cheap, especially during a sale. And the DLC even more so if you consider the added playtime they provide you in a game that's already hours and hours of fun.

Since it's a pixel art style game, the system requirements are very mild:

- Windows 7+, Intel core duo, 2 GB ram, OpenGL 3.2+, DirectX 11, 500 MB disk space.

Hidden gems: Puzzle Platformers

Hidden gems: Puzzle Platformers

Today, I am gonna show you 3 decent puzzle platformers: Ageless, Defy Gravity, and The Swapper. You might ask yourselves why did he choose these 3 games, they have almost nothing in common? Well, the answer is very simple: They are 2d puzzle platformers with a unique twist.

Ageless

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1210150/Ageless/

The first time I heard about Ageless was in a recent Humble Bundle Choice. I love puzzles and platformers so it immediately caught my attention. It was developed by One More Dream Studios and published by Team17 Digital LTD on July 20th, 2020.

You play as Kiara, a young girl with no confidence suffering from depression looking for a “Gift” that she believes will solve all her problems. This gift is a magical bow that lets her become ageless, freeze time temporarily for everything but herself. In addition, it also allows her to channel life energy or nearby lifeforms. You can either give them energy (make them older) or take it from them (make them younger). You can also steal some life force and use it to dash around. Different creatures have different abilities, different interactions and it’s up to you to find the best way to maneuver around the world of Ageless.

Puzzles are interesting, although the difficulty in some areas is not exactly balanced. You can find a room that can be solved with a couple of jumps here, then 2 screens later find yourself needing a dozen tight actions to complete the required puzzle.

While playing you will come across Relics. They are the game's collectibles similar to how strawberries work in Celeste. They are mostly hidden in their own sections, but some appear on the main path. Each relic unlocks a display piece in the relic room. There is also an achievement for getting them all.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Processor: Intel i3-2100 @ 3GHz

Memory: 4 GB RAM

Graphics: GTX650 1GB VRAM

DirectX: Version 11

Storage: 2 GB available space

Defy Gravity

https://store.steampowered.com/app/96100/Defy_Gravity_Extended/

Defy Gravity is a very simplistic sci-fi puzzle platformer. It was made by Paul Fisch and published by Fish Factory Games in early 2016. It’s one of those games that’s easy to get into but difficult to master.

You play as Kara (as opposed but similar to Kiara from Ageless) and attempt to complete the Gauntlet, a series of tests to prove one worthy of calling themselves Gravitymancer.

The graphics are very basic, and the story is practically non-existent, but that’s okay, cause games like these draw you in with gameplay. The main appeal here is that you have a gun that can create gravity fields. You can make it pull objects towards the center, or push objects away (you included). Your suit allows you to temporarily prevent the gravity field effects on you alone. This leads to a very interesting approach to all puzzles, as it allows unique solutions for almost every one.

Once you complete the gauntlet, you will be able to enter the Hard Mode. This is basically the same game but with a simple twist: your gravity fields can only pull objects now! Sounds simple, but you quickly realize that the game is at least twice harder than it was before.

Minimum Requirements:

OS: Windows XP/Vista/7/10

Processor: 1.5Ghz

Memory: 512Mb

Hard Disk Space: 50Mb

Video Card: 128 MB Graphics Card that supports Shader Model 1.1

DirectX®: 9.0c

The swapper

https://store.steampowered.com/app/231160/The_Swapper/

Another sci-fi-themed game, this time it’s the Swapper. Narrative-driven, atmospheric and intriguing game which allows you to create clones of yourself and swap your mind between them. A very unique approach to puzzle games. It was developed by Olli Harjola, Otto Hantula, Tom Jubert and Carlo Castellano, and published by Facepalm games on 30th May 2013.

I would compare the camera and angles to Limbo, but the world and gameplay are significantly different. The art in The Swapper is constructed using clay models and everyday materials, which combine to create truly unique visuals in a detailed and atmospheric environment. It’s something you have to play to fully grasp and understand.

Create up to 4 clones that mimick your moves, and swap your mind (main character) between them. Use them to press switches, create temporary bridges, or in any other way you want. All that matters is that you get your mind to the exit.
